Make your own butterfly Buckthorn!
We've taken the hassle out of sourcing all the right hardware, notions and materials and put together a kit containing everything you'll need to sew yourself a beautiful black and gold butterfly backpack.
We've made sure all the materials are high quality so that your sewing experience is as good as it can be and to make sure the bag will last - it's too cool not to!
If you don't already have the pattern, you can choose to add it when you check out.
Noodlehead patterns have excellent instructions and are great for beginners or those new to bag-making.
The kit contains:
- 70cm piece Ruby Star Society 'Queen' cotton & linen canvas with metallic print (also available separately in our shop)
- 50cm piece organic cotton poplin for the lining
- a 16" black YKK bag zip
- a set of Prym hardware in gold finish (2 x adjustable buckle, 2x triangle ring and 2x snap hook)
- 110cm piece Vilene G700 medium-weight woven fusible interfacing in white
- 45cm piece Vilene Style-Vil sew-in bag foam
- 3.7m piece black cotton 40mm webbing
- optional: Buckthorn sewing pattern
All you'll need are your sewing equipment (a rotary cutter, self-healing mat and gridded ruler makes cutting out the pieces a doddle!), sewing machine, some sort of marking tool (we like simple tailor's chalk) and polyester sew-all thread.
Some of the quantities are slightly different than stated on the pattern - this is because those were cut from a wider fabric, don't worry, we made our own test version to make sure there is enough!
We have packaged this simply in brown paper, the Prym hardware and sewing pattern have been left in their retail packaging.
Due to limited supply we are only making a few of these kits and they are only available in the UK.
SEWING TIPS: Learn from my mistake on the test version and spend a bit of time positioning the print on the fabric, especially when you cut the front pocket - a centered butterfly that is the right way round would look lovely there!
I also accidentally made the selvedge a feature - I like it, but just make sure that when you cut your pieces you know where the selvedge is so you can decide for yourself whether it should show or not..
NOTE: Noodlehead doesn't include pattern pieces for square or rectangular parts of the make, just the cutting measurements - we recommend a gridded ruler, cutting mat and rotary cutter to cut your pieces accurately!
